Red Orbit

A pilot and a torus robot companion set course on a deep-space mission — and find something ancient and tentacled already awake aboard the ship.

Red Orbit is an original science-fiction short by F5 Refresh, and the first film built around the studio's own cast of characters: a pilot, his ship, and Fenix, a red torus-shaped robot who keeps that ship in order.

The story turns on an intruder. An octopus-like alien slips aboard without anyone noticing. Fenix finds it first and does exactly what a ship's robot should do: it fights. The confrontation escalates until the pilot arrives and stops it, because the stranger is not a stranger at all. He is an old friend.

The film runs a minute and a half. It was made when image and video models were far less reliable than they are today, with Nano Banana generating the imagery and Kling bringing it into motion. The hardest part of the production was consistency: keeping the pilot, Fenix and the alien recognisably themselves from one shot to the next, when the tools of the time would drift a character's face, colour or proportions between frames. That continuity had to be directed shot by shot. It is the kind of judgement a model does not make on its own, and it is the reason the characters hold together as a cast rather than a sequence of lookalikes.
