The Alchemist

The encounter of the esoteric and the exoteric — the hidden knowledge and the world it surfaces into.

The Alchemist is a one-minute action film with no dialogue, made as an original F5 Refresh piece. It takes the shape of David and Goliath and moves it into the desert: a lone alchemist against a colossal statue that has come to life.

The fight is unequal from the first frame, and it is meant to be. The alchemist cannot win by strength, so the film turns on what he carries rather than who he is. He reveals a scripture, it burns, and from the fire rises a phoenix. The phoenix takes up the fight and brings the colossus down.

Without dialogue, everything has to be carried by scale, movement and the edit: the size of the statue against a single figure, the build from confrontation to transformation, and the moment the story passes from the man to the bird. That is where the direction sits. The giant has to feel impossible for the ending to land, and every shot is designed around that contrast.
